Y Felinheli

21/3/15
We left Harlech fuelled with the usual bacon and eggs and addition of freshly baked bread. The bad news was that the bridge at Pont Briwet had been obliterated in the January 2014 sea surges that caused so much damage.

It would result in an additional 13km ride around the estuary but worse would be the poor convoy that would have to follow us at glacial speed for a couple of miles. Inspiration came from our B&B hosts who suggested taking the train for one stop! This we did and we are eternally grateful to Cheryl, Peter and Ariva Trains Wales for this short cut.

We could not contain our excitement as we waited on the request stop station, we were then quickly through Porthmadog and Tremadog before gently climbing on the NCN 8 on a beautiful sunny day on a stunning cycle route. We soon joined a dedicated cycle way that rises to 150m before decending north to Caernafon.

When we paused for lunch a sticked figure with a dog slowly approach. The dog was interested in our sandwich but the blind man startled when we spoke. His journey seemed very adventurous and is a credit to how the NCN routes can open up possibilities and access to all. The decent to Caernafon along the Welsh mountain Railway was as gradual as the climb and our arrival in the city was perfect, the first view was of the castle and the sunshine prompted an ice cream purchase.

A few more km brought us to the Plas Dinorwig Hotel just a short distance from the Menai Bridge. You may have noticed that we have sadly skipped the Lleyn peninsular and on our way to Anglesey. This has bought us some extra sight- seeing days in Llandudno!

Figures:
Distance:- 55 km
Cycle Time:- 4 hours 7 minutes
Average speed:- 13.3 kph
Total Distance:- 785 km
