The decision to see just one corner of Anglesey was helped by the lack of availability of accommodation so we opted for the east corner in the castle town of Beaumaris- or "beautiful marshes" on which the unfinished Georgian castle was originally built.
We left Y Felinheli after the brief rain shower and crossed the Menai Straits via the old bridge which carries the historic A5 route from London to Holyhead.
Our main objective for the day was Plas Newydd just over the bridge, once home of the the Marquess of Anglsey, the first being Henry Paget who lost a leg at the battle of Waterloo. The property is now looked after by the National Trust so pleased that, as new members, we could save £9.35 each!
Apart from the leek and potato soup in the coffee shop the highlight of this visit is definitely the huge Rex Whistler painting covering the full length of the dining room wall. It's optical illusions with perspective are captivating.
As the sun set on our view across to the Carneddau in Snowdonia we strolled the promenade and pier before sitting down to sea bass at Pier House Bistro.
