It has always an ambition of mine to spend May and June in Scotland. I should add April to that as, apart from the odd hail storm, it is fantastic. We woke to the clearest blue sky you can imagine and just a light wind that seemed to help us with the big climb up and over into Tobermory.
En route Sue spotted an Otter, not uncommon these days but probably only the 4th time she's seen them in over 20 years. We stopped for hot Ribena/ tea and watched it swimming by the shore for a short while.
It is the first time we have seen Tobermory in warm sunshine, the colourful frontage gleaming out from a distance.
After our steep decent, we headed directly for Cafe Fish in the harbour and enjoyed a good seafood lunch at this highly acclaimed restaurant on the top floor above the Cal-Mac office.
We then went to the Co-op to stock up with 3 days of food for our time in Ardnamurchan. We had a pot of tea back at The Pier before taking the 6th ferry of our journey.
The small crossing to Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula seems to be be struggling for custom. One car exited and just one got on with us and our bikes. Cal-Mac must be running at a loss but the cheerful man that took our ticket, kept himself busy by polishing porthole frames with Brasso!
Ardnamurchan has a great out of the way feel, the Whale Bone Bothy at Ardnamurchan Campsite was just a few kilometres away and a fine place to spend the next 3 nights - with 2 days of minimal cycling we hope to get rid of weariness and sore throats - it will be like a holiday!
