Today was a planned rest day and the forecast was for rain all day. We had a brief excursion to Smoo Caves where excavation has revealed 7000 year old evidence of habitation. The cave system is in the process of exploration but the heavy rain limited the extent to which we could explore.
After an afternoon of reading, Skyping Joe and relaxing we ventured out again in full rain gear to a solo theatre performance of A World Beyond Man at Durness village hall. This is a desperate true story based on the diaries of Valerian Albanov. It tells of how he and 13 of the crew of the St Anna escaped the ship which had become stranded in Arctic ice for 2 years. It was a remarkable and creative performance and worth our own little battle against the elements to walk to the venue along the cliff tops in driving rain and wind.
