Rest Day 7

14/4/15

At first sight it was hard to see what qualified Castle Douglas as a designated Scottish food town but later discoveries proved us wrong. After a successful shop for a few bike bits it was clear that this is a thriving town with predominantly independent shops including 3 butchers, 2 bike shops loads of good cafe's and some nice restaurants. There was, not surprisingly, great protest when Tesco landed its mega store just on the outskirts and incomprehensible as to why it was permitted when there is a perfectly good Co-op of a similar size quite centrally.
We had a double take when we passed a Banksy-style painting of a false shop front but there were very few retailers closing down.

We walked to Threave House (National Trust for Scotland) and were pleased to use our English NT card but disappointed that, contrary to web site info, the house was closed so we settled for a wander in the gardens and sat in the hide watching red squirrels for some time.
