With a short ride ahead of us, we dropped in to see the 14th Century Threave Castle built by Archibald the Grim - Lord of Galloway.
We didn't take the small boat journey across the river Dee to the island on which the castle stands but instead went to chat to the NTS Osprey volunteer at the Osprey viewing platform who had his telescope trained on the perched nest across the river. We didn't see the male in flight but could see the female as she sat in her nest. (Osprey's can close their nostrils to avoid water getting up their nose)
We followed the Dee down stream to Kirkcudbright (ker-coo-bree in case you were wondering!) Crossing the river a couple of times past Tongland Art Deco power station snd so from a "food town" to a "artist's town".
This is another delightful town with a great fish and chip shop called Polarbites with a difference - we had queen scallops in cream and white wine with chips and salad.
We visited Broughton House, former home of Scottish painter E A Hornel, one of the Glasgow Boys and enjoyed the warm sunshine in his Japanese inspired garden.
And then to Kirkcudbright Bay Hotel.
