After a short ride to Dumfries we crossed the River Nith via a new foot bridge in this majestic market town built solidly in red sandstone.
Known as Queen of the South, we sadly had no time to stop and explore so began our climb up the old military road in a headwind and deteriorating weather. With our sights set on a cup of tea in the unpronounceable Haugh of Urr, we were disheartened to arrive just as the pub closed so pressed on to Castle Douglas.
A very comfortable night at Douglas Housr B&B and an excellent plate of fish at Nikos Greek restaurant was what we needed after a difficult day.
